Textile & Handloom Exercise 1.5.45
Shawl Weaving Artisan - Weaving and Designing
Change in structure by varying lifting plan on graph paper
Objectives : At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
• prepare different weave designs by changing lifting plan.
Requirements
Tools/Equipment’s/Instruments Materials
• 4-shaft loom - 1 No. • Graph note book - 1 No.
• Warp threads - 1 No. • Pencil - 1 No.
• Weft thread - 1 No. • Sharpener - 1 No.
• Reed - 1 No. • Eraser - 1 No.
• Heddles - 1 No.
PROCEDURE
TASK 1: Changing the structure of a diamond twill weave by varying the lifting plan (treadling sequence) on
graph paper
Step 1: Set up your graph paper 3 Reverse twill
• Turn your paper so the top edge is threading, left • Treadle: 4–3–2–1
edge is tie-up, and bottom right is treadling.
4 Asymmetrical treadling
• Use four shafts: label them 1 to 4 from bottom to top • Treadle: 1–2–3–3–2–1
(tie-up).
• Use the same pointed threading as before: 1–2–3– 5 Extended treadling
4–3–2–1 and repeat. • Treadle: 1–2–3–4–4–4–3–2–1
Step 2: Try Different Lifting Plans (Treadling Variations) 6 Treadling with pauses (Repeated picks)
1 Point Treadling (Standard diamond) • Treadle: 1–2–2–3–4–3–2–1
• Treadle: 1–2–3–4–3–2–1 Likewise change the structure of a different
weaves by varying the lifting plan (treadling
2 Straight treadling (Zigzag)
sequence) on graph paper
• Treadle: 1–2–3–4, repeat
